The Australian PGA started this format of 54 holes’ stroke play played over 3 days culminating in a 6-hole knockout (Matchplay) for the fourth and final rounds and is now a sanctioned European Tour Event
After 36 holes the professional is a cut line to the top 65 and ties – the field is further reduced on the third day of stroke play to 24 players, with the top 8 automatically seeded into the top 8 positions for the second Match Play round.
If matches are all square at the end of six holes – the match is decided on a 90-metre shootout hole. The player winning the hole then progresses to the next round of the Knockout or, in the case of the final match, win the tournament. If the match is still all square at the end of the first shootout hole the players return to for a decide hole where the nearest-the-pin contest decides the winner
